No Shirt, No Shoes, No Clothes, No Problem! Five Reasons to Go on a Naked Vacation

girl

So what is a nude vacation or nakation really like? Well for starters it’s a lot of fun and a wonderful way to relax and enjoy time with your spouse. Couples go on beach vacations all the time for together time and to leave the stress of work, kids and life at home. So why not leave your bikini and swimming shorts at home too and discover why so many couples have found nude vacations to be the ultimate, secret getaway.

My wife and I have been going on nude vacations and getaways for nearly 20 years now, yet I wouldn’t call us nudist. We have learned that vacationing in the buff is a wonderful way to enjoy our time together and relax. And yes, it is better because we’re both naked. Let me explain.

Nudity is never an issue unless it is an issue and then it’s the only issue.

If you’ve never taken off your bathing suit on a beach or untied your bikini top and bottom at a pool then nudity is an issue because you’ve never been nude socially before. I’ll be honest, taking off your clothing in front of others can be very scary and anxious. It also can be fun and exciting. Talk to any couple at a nude beach or resort and they’ll tell you that they were nervous the first time too. You will be nervous for a bit but once you get past this feeling, you’ll start to feel something wonderful: freedom, relaxation and warmth. Once you’ve tried it, chances are you’ll like it and even look forward to taking your clothes off next time. A transformation takes place as you become more comfortable with your naked self and your naked spouse. It’s hard to describe but most couple wish they had done it years before.

A nude beach or resort is relaxed, warm and comfortable. Not sexual.

The biggest myth of nude resorts and beaches is that it is a highly sexual environment. It actually isn’t sexual at all. It’s relaxed. It’s warm. It’s comfortable. It’s fun. In fact, most nude resorts have policies against any type of sexual contact or intimacy that is strictly enforced. There is a time and place for everything and on a beach or by a pool surrounded by other naked couples isn’t it.  This isn’t to say that I don’t feel a certain spark when I see my beautiful wife take off her bikini or admire her walking on the beach with nothing on.  That’s one of the reasons it’s special for us, but admiring your spouse isn’t foreplay. However enjoying each other’s company later in the privacy of your own room after spending the day naked is a wonderful way to end the day.

People just like you go on nude vacations every day.

So do people like you go on nude vacations? That depends on if you’re fun, open and enjoy being naked with your spouse around others. We’ve met many wonderful couples at each and every beach and resort we’ve been to over the years. It’s amazing, when you meet someone and you’re both naked, the conversation is far more open, honest and friendly. In fact, we’ve found most of the couples we’ve met while on nude getaways are very much like us. They are highly educated or students, professionals and home makers, republicans and democrats, moms and dads, community leaders, students, newly weds, retirees…  The point is they are just people who enjoy vacationing with their spouse or partner without wearing any clothing and they are open to talking with other couples who are there enjoying themselves too.

Nude beaches and resorts are wonderful places to visit.

How many times have you been on vacation in a tropical setting with a beautiful beach or pool, warm sun and blue sky, great food and drink, incredible amenities and breathtaking views and asked yourself, “How could this be any better?” Make the beach or resort nude or clothing optional and it just got better.

Funny that removing something from paradise can actually make it better. For us, it really is a state of mind that we only feel when we’re together in a nude setting. We’ve taken walks on the beach in swim suits a million times but walk the beach in the buff and it’s a very comfortable and warm shared experience. If I go skinny dipping in the waves or layout on a raft with my wife naked in a pool, I feel like a teenager all over again.

So what’s the perfect nude vacation for a first timer?

Nude vacations are as individual as you and your spouse are. They can be relaxed and refreshing or adventurous and loud. Perhaps the most important question is determining first where you want to go: a nude beach or resort?  Many couples are nervous about baring it all for the first time on vacation, which is why a nude beach might be a better option.

Nude beaches are bare as much as you dare or better yet, take off your bathing suit as you’re more comfortable. My wife and I have been to numerous nude beaches and it’s fascinating to watch first time couples get comfortable with shedding their suits. You’re not in Kansas any more Dorothy. Most first timers are a little nervous and take time to take off their suits but by the end of the day, they’re usually the Mayors of the beach — running around and playing naked in the waves. If you want to know more about what to expect on a nude beach, check out our earlier blog on the topic.

Maybe you and your spouse are comfortable already with being nude around others. Or maybe you want a pool instead of a beach. Or you want to pack a week’s worth of clothing in a carry on. Either way you will love a nude resort. It’s everything you would look for in a tropical resort vacation, except no clothing required (except in restaurants). Nude resorts make life very easy for you while you’re on vacation. My wife and I love being catered to and when we’re on a nude vacation and all we have to do is get there and the rest is provided for us, it doesn’t get any better. You don’t need to bring a lot of clothing or extras. Resort staff take care of everything from drinks to food to entertainment. All you and your spouse have to do is enjoy your time together splashing in the water, sitting by the pool or having a beer at the bar and all of this without a stitch on. To learn more about what to expect at a nude resort, check out our earlier blog on the topic.

So are you ready to go? Before you book your trip, remember to talk to your spouse first. As I mentioned before, public or social nudity is a big issue for most people until they try it and see what it’s really like. Don’t ever surprise your spouse with a nude vacation. That’s a recipe for disaster.

And remember, a trip to Couples in Jamaica is very different from a trip to Club Orient in St. Maartin to Hedonism II in Jamaica. Check out their websites and you’ll see what I mean.  It’s important to find a place where you can enjoy your time together in the nude and feel comfortable. Remember, planning the trip should be almost as much fun as being there.

Have questions? Have concerns? Got a point to share with others? Did we forget something? Let us know your thoughts. We’re here to give you the best information possible to plan a perfect naked vacation. Have fun. And don’t forget to bring lots of tanning lotion or sun screen. It’s amazing how quickly you burn in spots that have never seen the sun before. 🙂

Is a Naked Body or a Partially Clothed Body More Sexual?

SI Cover Model Hannah Davis causing controversy
SI Cover Model Hannah Davis causing controversy

Meet Model Hannah Davis on the cover of the 2015 Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Edition. What do you think? Many are calling this cover photo “pornographic” and “too sexual.” This leads to an interesting question about which is more explicit: a man or woman wearing nothing at all or wearing very little?

After coming back from a week at Orient Beach in St. Maarten, I can honestly say I’ve been around hundreds of naked and partially clothed men and women. I’ll admit when my wife and I first started going to clothing optional beaches and resorts, I would have said that a naked body was more explicit than one covered by swim trunks or bikini. While it wasn’t a physical turn on to see my wife naked, it certainly was mentally. She looked then and still does today stunning with nothing on.

To me this is actually one of the many misconceptions about nude beaches and nudist resorts. Is the human body beautiful? Yes, it can be. Have I seen attractive women and men on a nude beach? Of course, but to be honest, the only times I’ve ever caught myself staring at someone is when they were wearing very little. As I saw at Orient Beach, the only time a couple attracted any attention from others was when they were clothed and often the barely there thongs and bikinis were far more explicit than a naked body.

I do understand that many women are more comfortable wearing a thong or small bikini. My wife included. When she was walking to the beach bar or bathroom, she wore a thong bikini that I bought for her specifically for this trip. Did she attract attention? I loved it but I have no idea if anyone else “noticed” her more in her thong than when she was naked.

This is a topic that is often discussed. So what do you think? This is just my opinion.  Here are several comments/suggestions that have been sent to me. Great thoughts and observations:

From A Naturist’s Lens @ http://skycladtherapy.wordpress.com
I agree with you that nearly nude is far more sexual than nude, especially in the context that one is aware of cloth touching intimately, highlighting that intimacy. Nudity is less so for both the person who would wear next to nothing and the person who sees next to nothing framing the zones of sexuality. Thanks for bringing up the topic. 🙂

From jochanaan1 @ http://jochanaan.wordpress.com
Context and body language are everything. You don’t expect sex in a nudist gathering or even on a nude beach; but you expect at least sensuality in a “strip club” or certain other events. And when we see nudity or near-nudity where we don’t expect it, as on the street, in a workplace, or on church, we don’t know what to expect, so our cultural conditioning starts up and we think sexual thoughts–at least for a moment. But, as many of us have found, what was conditioned in can be conditioned out. 🙂

From naturalian @ http://naturalian.wordpress.com

To me, having on very small garments like thongs or micro bikinis is far more suggestive than being completely naked – it concentrates the eye on the parts that are (just) concealed! That’s why I hate clothed beaches, all those scaps of different cloured cloth detract from the naturalness of the beach!

From Bruce @ http://www.sffb.com
As TA Wyner once said, “When bathing suits get tinier, the eye naturally goes straight to what is still covered. When people are naked, nakedness becomes natural, and eyes go straight to eyes.” The SI cover photo is clearly NOT pornographic. There is nothing sexual happening. The vagina and clitoris are still covered. It’s nothing but a big tease for guys to entice them to buy the mag. Sexy? Yes. Porn? Hell no.

Great points. What do you think?

Orient Beach Observations on St. Maarten/St. Martin

The World Famous Orient Beach by Club Orient, St. Maarten
The World Famous Orient Beach by Club Orient, St. Maarten

My wife and I had a wonderful week on Orient Beach in St. Maarten/St. Martin the last week of February. While the beach is actually several named beaches in one and nearly 2 1/2 miles long, it features perhaps the best known nude/clothing optional beach in the World: Orient Beach by Club Orient.

Orient Beach really isn’t a bare as much as you dare beach… I’d say about 95% of the beach goers on it are naked and enjoying every minute of it, including my wife and me. If you haven’t been, we’d highly recommend putting it on your Nakation Bucket List.

Orient Beach from a rocky point.
Orient Beach from a rocky point.

Knowing that many couples have their first nude beach experience on Orient Beach, I was interested to see the first timers reactions. I collected these tips after watching several first time couples experiences. Some I’m sure will be back again soon. Others perhaps never. I recommend reading on if you haven’t been but are planning a trip to a nude beach with your spouse or are planning on visiting Orient Beach soon.

  • You can’t embarrass a nudist. It was hysterical watching couples (mainly from cruise ships docked in St. Maarten for the day) walk the entire Orient Beach shoreline but somehow never look up at the naked people laying out on chairs, walking by them or skinny dipping in the water. You could tell they were too embarrassed to make eye contact, which gets to my first point. Remember, time on a nude beach is shared time between you and your spouse. Don’t worry about any one else or what they’re doing, because honestly, they don’t care. They’re enjoying the beach, sun and sand in the buff. You can too. Which gets to my next very important point….
  • The only time any one will notice you on a nude beach is when your clothes are on. It’s funny to say but clothing really does identify and define us. You really do notice bikinis and other swimwear but take it all off and you really just look like part of the nude beach crowd. You don’t stand out. A younger couple laid out their towels near my wife and me. They were close enough that I could hear them. They had obviously talked about coming to Orient Beach already because with a smile on their faces, they counted down and together stripped off their bathing suits. I had to laugh ten minutes later when she asked him to go for a swim. He picked up his swimsuit bottoms and then said, “Why bother. No one cares anyways.” Exactly… and off they ran to go skinny dipping.
  • Take a dip and do what you’re comfortable with for the first time. Another couple was walking down the beach in their bathing suits. They got a ways down the beach, sat down on an empty beach chair and shed their suits. Then they went skinny dipping for awhile. They had a blast. When they were done, they dried off and put their suits back on. I never saw them again, but judging by the smiles on their faces when they left, they will remember it for a long time.
  • Take your time. I watched several couples nervously pick a spot on the beach, layout on a beach chair and then slowly over the next few hours remove bikini tops, swimsuit trunks and bikini bottoms. You could see them getting comfortable and enjoying their time together.  Most, but not all were naked by the end of the day. We saw another couple walking in a large group in the morning (all with swimsuits on) and then come back later in the day. She had taken off her top this time. The next time we saw them they had taken everything off and were laying out and enjoying the sun. Remember, there is no rush. It should be a comfortable experience for the two of you.
  • Take a picture and remember it. While there are signs everywhere on Orient Beach reminding us to not take a picture, I honestly recommend otherwise. Take a picture of your spouse or ask someone to take a picture of you both. Your time in the sun will be over too quickly and a memory or picture lasts much longer. Now I’m not telling you to take a picture of everyone on the beach. Absolutely not! I take a picture of my wife naked every time we’re together on a beach. I’m not sending it to friends or sharing it with anyone else. Days, weeks, months and even years later it always brings a smile to my face when I see that picture and think about the memory of being there together.
  • It’s okay to just keep on walking. The majority of the people who ventured down to Orient Beach when we were there wore their swimsuits. They came to see the nude beach and apparently decided it wasn’t for them. That’s okay. It can be very intimidating the first time. We saw one couple make their way down the beach and find a nice spot in the sun. She started to take off her bikini top and her boyfriend/husband stopped her.  With a smile on his face, he said, “I can’t do this. I want to but I just can’t.” She stopped what she was doing and the two walked off hand-in-hand. Honestly, that was some of the best communications I’ve seen in many years.
  • Let no one judge you. So we’ve all had that nightmare of what happens if someone I know sees me naked on the beach? I saw it happen to another couple and later to us.  For the other couple they were walking together on the beach with the waves breaking on their feet. She was topless.  Another completely clothed couple recognized them from their cruise and the woman said, “Wow look at your topless girl.”  I was interested to see if she would cover up. She didn’t. She wasn’t embarrassed. She replied, “I’ve always wanted to do this and I don’t think I’ll be able to get the smile off his face.” Wow, what a great response. We saw them several more times that day and she was topless all day long and yes, I do believe her husband is still smiling now. Which brings us to our experience….
  • What happens on the beach, stays on the beach. So while standing in line for drinks at the Club Orient Beach Bar, I started talking with another couple. I was naked, he was naked and his wife was topless and wearing only a small thong. Eventually we started talking about where we were from and were surprised to find that we live less than five miles from one another. We even have mutual friends.  They were a great couple and we had a blast talking with them later during our vacation. There is an unwritten rule that who you see on the beach, remains nameless when you return home. I’m not sure if we’ll ever see them again, but I’m sure they’ll keep their little secret just as we will too.

I would love to go back to Orient Beach again very soon but it will probably be a while. If you’re planning a trip to St. Maarten/St. Martin, I encourage you to visit and have your own nude beach experience with your spouse. It will be time well spent together.

Ready, Set, Strip… Planning a Naked Couples Vacation to St. Martin

Orient Beach is often the first place many couples experience a nude beach.
Orient Beach is often the first place many couples experience a nude beach.

We finally decided to leave the kids, snow and freezing temperatures of the U.S. Midwest to strip down to our bare bottoms to enjoy the sun and surf. After checking out several of the properties I mentioned in an our earlier wish list, I found out we’re a bit late. The properties we wanted to visit in Key West, Tulum and Jamaica were booked already for March.

I was really disappointed when I realized that Club Orient on St. Martin was booked too and then I realized I was missing the big picture. Yes, it’s great to go to a nude resort where you only have to pack carry on luggage because you really don’t wear much (anything) during the week. However, St. Martin is perfect for the couple looking to explore a nude vacation without any pressure. All of St. Martin’s beaches are topless and many have clothing optional sections too. It’s a win-win for the couple who isn’t ready to book a week at Hidden Beach Resort in Mexico or Caliente Caribe Resort in the Dominican Republic.

I’m a big believer that planning is one of the best parts of a trip. We went to St. Martin nearly 15 years ago and things have changed a lot since then. For one, the Internet making travel planning so much easier. We can research hotels, prices and options quickly and easily. Here are several nude/clothing optional B&Bs and resorts on St. Martin we would have liked to have tried. Unfortunately, our travel schedule and their availability didn’t match:

Club Fantastico — This is a new option on St. Martin and from what I can tell, it looks wonderful. Many of the same features as Club Orient, except not on the beach. We would love to check this property out one day. If you’ve been there, tell us what you think.

Naturist’s Getaway, Oyster Pond, French St. Martin – I loved this place from the moment I read about it. Why? Location, location, location. I can’t image a better experience than four studio apartments around a pool. Beautiful landscaping and privacy and only 10 minutes drive from Orient Bay too. I traded several emails with the owners. Lovely people. Unfortunately they were booked when we wanted to travel. Next time…

St. Martin is the ultimate beach lovers’ vacation. With more than 40 different beaches and all a bit different, there is something to explore every day depending on what you’re looking for. Romantic location, great bars and restaurants, beautiful rocky cliffs, snorkeling, a striking sunrise or sunset, St. Martin’s beaches have it all.

We decided to stay at a hotel on Orient Beach so that we can walk to the nude section (by Club Orient) and enjoy the benefits of our room being very close for lunch, shower or a nap. Our plan is to be centered at Orient Beach but to make day trips to other favorites. Which beaches you ask? Here are some beach we hit before that we will absolutely go to again:

Cupecoy Beach – I LOVE THIS BEACH. It has beautiful rock formations all over the beach and offers privacy and a chance to explore caves. The water can be a bit rough here, but it’s perfect for body surfing. It also has the best BBQ on the island. Visiting Cupecoy Beach is a most.

Happy Bay – I love the idea of finding my own little beach to discover and Happy Bay is it. It doesn’t have any place to get food or drink, so you’ll want to bring a lunch but imagine a romantic beach with few others nearby. It’s technically not a nude beach, but is often used by couples to lay out nude or skinny dip. Just be aware that you may need to put on clothes if families are nearby.

Orient Beach – Yes, you’ve heard about it already but in addition to being a perfect nude beach, Orient has the best people watching of any beach you’ll ever see. And this leads to one of my favorite activities: Watching the cruisers (couples visiting St. Martin for the day from a cruise ship) walk onto Orient Beach and then decide, should we or shouldn’t we strip down and enjoy the beach naked? Not surprisingly, Orient Beach is often the first place many couples try a nude beach experience. My wife and I like to take bets on who will take their bathing suite off first, him or her. Add beach chairs, umbrellas, lots of food options, beverages and hotels and you have the perfect, first time nude beach experience.

Maho Bay – Alright this is not a nude beach and to be honest, you’d have to be pretty daring to try it here. So why did this beach make my list? This is the beach you see from the plane when you land. It’s an awesome experience watching a 747 land just barely over your head. The Sunset Beach Bar is the perfect place to watch too.

As you can see, we have a lot of places we want to visit on St. Martin. We’re looking forward to going there in a few weeks. Been there before? Interested in going? Let us know your thoughts.

Best Nude Beach on Kauai is no Secret… Secret Beach Shouldn’t be Missed

When my wife and I first visited Kauai, we were looking for a tropical island getaway. We wanted to go somewhere we had never gone before (ruling out Mexico) and for this trip, we wanted to find and enjoy all of the nature and beauty of Kauai without our clothes. It was the first trip we had taken specifically to find and enjoy a nude beach.

Sure, we did all of the tourist activities too and there is a lot to do here. If you’re headed to Kauai you must visit Waimea Canyon aka the Grand Canyon of the Pacific; Wailua Falls (the water fall from the TV show Fantasy Island); and the incredible Napali Coast, which can be seen via boat or by hiking. YOu can fill a week with amazing sites and activities on Kauai. Researching this blog is making me want to go back and visit sooner rather than later.

You might not realize it but you’ve probably already seen Kauai’s beaches, rain forests and mountains in many of Hollywood’s biggest movies like Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark and South Pacific to name a few.

Honestly, Kauai is well worth the trip for all the reasons I have mentioned, but with a nude beach like Secret Beach (also know as Kauapea Beach), the island is the perfect place for a couple’s first clothing optional experience. It is laid back, not crowded and a natural wonder that can not be enjoyed simply by visiting for 15 minutes. You need to stay for the day.

Secret Beach is just west of Kilauea Point Lighthouse, which is another landmark to visit while on Kauai. Secret Beach has it all. The best clothing optional beaches are hard to get to (they require a walk usually down a very steep hill) and are immediately memorable as soon as you walk on the beach. I’m not taking about naked bodies. Secret Beach is memorable because it is cut right out of the cliffs and features beautiful soft sand with black lava rocks breaking through the sand and all with tropical rainforest behind it. In the summer, tidal pools can be found near the east side of the beach while in winter, the waves are huge and crash into the shore with great force. Depending on the weather there are several natural waterfalls on the beach too.

We visited in late January/early February. The view from the beach is incredibly beautiful, especially in the winter months when whales are birthing their calves. We saw whales breeching only 200-300 yards off the beach. Am I painting a pretty amazing picture here? It gets better.

So why is Secret Beach perfect for a couple looking for their first nude beach experience? First off, it’s a big beach with plenty of space for you to find your own piece of paradise. You won’t be on top of one another like Haulover beach in Miami, which is another great nude beach but a polar opposite to Secret Beach.

Second, it’s mainly tourists who visit the beach. Most, but not all, are there as first time nudists or others who have visited here before. When you’re all trying something for the first time, it’s a lot less intimidating. You won’t find many gawkers running around which can be very intimidating for the first time nudist. It’s laid back, relaxing and let’s you and your spouse get started at your own pace. On it’s busiest day, there was 30 people on the beach. It was winter so I’m expecting it to be more crowded in the summer months, but it really is a great laid back setting.

Third, and forgive me if I sound a little too granola here, but for me, this is the perfect beach setting best enjoyed nude. Imagine one of the most beautiful beaches ever, your spouse is next to you. You’re both relaxed and comfortable. You’re listening to the waves crash on the shore. You’re laying comfortably on the beach with black lava boulders near by and beautiful flowers and lush tropical plants going up the cliff behind you.  She looks beautiful (Handsome if it’s your husband:). You’re both naked as the day you were born and you couldn’t be happier. You don’t want to go because it’s a total sensory experience between the smell of the ocean, warmth of the sun, the crash of the waves and the paradise around you.  This is why this is the perfect beach to visit, especially if you want to experience a nude beach for the first time. It should be on your list.

So what should you be prepared for other than sunscreen? Water and food come to mind immediately. This beach is not easy to get to and you’ll want to stay all day. Bring food and water so you don’t have to leave early. Also, and this is important, if you bring it to the beach, be sure to take it away. Don’t litter or leave your garbage. There are no facilities here, including a bathroom.

I should note during our week long stay here we never went swimming at Secret Beach. The winter surf is very dangerous here and while beautiful, this is a very deadly beach with many drownings. Any online references to Secret Beach note how dangerous the surf is even during the summer months. When we visited, the waves were huge as in way bigger than I am tall. There was no way I was going into the water.  Please be careful. There is no life guard here.

And what about Hawaii’s nudity laws? Technically you must wear a bathing suit at all times. Secret Beach is traditionally a clothing optional beach meaning it is shared by those wanting an all over tan and those wanting tan lines. I saw many references to the east end of the beach being nude. Share the beach and keep your eyes open for any reasons to put your suit back on, such as a police officer. I haven’t heard of any tickets being written lately but it has happened in the past.

There are many other nude beaches on Kauai and yes we did go to a few but none were the same experience as Secret Beach. I would go back in heartbeat. It was that amazing. If you’re interested in learning more about Secret Beach, I highly recommend visiting the Kauai Beach Scoop Website. It has great photography and video information for anyone wanting to plan a visit. The photography really is amazing. Enjoy.

Topless in Tahiti? Baring it all in Bora Bora? Yes, but it’s not as easy as you might think.

So does your wife want to go topless in Tahiti? Or do you both want to sunbath in the buff in Bora Bora? I’m guessing yes, based on reviewing the web analytics on our blog. Going topless or nude in Tahiti has been the main search that has brought people to read our blog.

So here’s what I can tell you. Women can go topless in French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, and 300 other smaller islands), unless a resort prohibits it like the St. Regis Bora Bora. My wife’s first topless experience was on our honeymoon in Tahiti and it couldn’t have been better. Read our blog post to learn more.

But what if you want to bare all in French Polynesia? When we were there 15+ years ago, the Sofitel Resort in Bora Bora had a private island for nude sunbathing. Unfortunately, they built a private resort on the island and it’s no longer an option for clothing optional travel.

So how can you be naked in Bora Bora or the other French Polynesian islands? Here is what I found.

1. Ask someone to take you by boat to an uninhabited motu aka island. This is probably your best option. Just make sure no one is there because while French Polynesian’s are comfortable with women being topless, male or female nudity is a big no-no. Read our blog to learn more about how we found that out. We still laugh about it.

2. If you have the money and I do mean money at $600+ per night, the overwater bungalows are amazing. They offer an incredible view, are super romantic and create an unforgettable experience. During my research on finding clothing optional options in French Polynesia, several people mentioned  skinny dipping from their private overwater bungalows and sunbathing nude from them if they could do it privately.  Again, this will depend on the resort, but this could be a good option.

3. Look for a private, sponsored trip by a tour company that caters to those of us who like to travel with just a carry on. Several tour companies offer nude cruises and trips to French Polynesia. Do a Google search to learn more.

4. Finally and this will take some work, try finding your own private beach. French Polynesia is a nation of islands… hundreds of them. Finding your own little piece of paradise shouldn’t be to difficult, but be careful to not offend the locals.

I hope this information helps. French Polynesia and specifically Bora Bora are amazing places. My wife and I highly recommend vacationing here. It is the perfect honeymoon location too. And as I mentioned before, it is a great place for women to go topless for the first time.

If you know of a clothing optional resort in French Polynesia or have other suggestions on where to go, please share them here. And if you happen to own a resort in French Polynesia and want to make a lot of money, consider offering a clothing optional option for guests.  From what I can tell, there is a big demand and no viable options right now.

Planning a trip to Tahiti and have questions or better yet, know of the perfect place to go skinny dipping or lay out nude while you’re there and want to share?  Let us know.

Topless in Tahiti… Yes, but don’t even think of sunbathing nude.

IMG_1101

This time last year, my wife and I went to one of our favorite nude resorts, Hidden Beach Resort  in Mexico. It’s an amazing place. Truly a five-star experience and one  we look forward to going back to again and again. I’ll share more about why HBR is one of our favorites in a later blog post.

While I’m sure we would have loved going to HBR on our honeymoon nearly 20 years ago, there is no way my wife or I would have been ready for an upscale, nude not clothing optional, resort experience. When we were there last we met a couple in their late 20s. The staff told them they were the youngest couple to ever stay there. While it could be the cost (HBR isn’t cheap), generally most of the couples we’ve met there are 45+ years. Personally, I don’t believe we would have been mature enough to enjoy it.

For us, our first nude or semi-nude vacation was our honeymoon to Tahiti. It was an amazing trip and kicked off our marriage. It was where my wife became truly comfortable with laying out, walking, swimming, canoeing, eating and talking to others without her bikini top on. It was a liberating experience for her and honestly taught me a lot about the unwritten language that can occur when a large group of women want to, but are uncomfortable to try something new like sunbathing topless.

First off, we decided to honeymoon in Tahiti because it was a place we wouldn’t be back to any time soon and because it was a tropical setting. We wanted to lay out, swim with the fish, enjoy romantic dinners and each other.  We did not choose to go there because the beaches are topless.

So where is Tahiti? It’s a long flight to literally the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Tahiti is actually the largest island and part of French Polynesia, which has more than 300 islands. If you want a truly tropical island experience with great food and incredible beaches and sea life, this is the place. It’s also un-Godly expensive but we’d love to go back if we could.

We spent ten days in French Polynesia (stay a minimum of two weeks) and went to three different islands. Our favorite was Bora Bora. We swam with sharks, ate great food, paddled around the lagoons, snorkeled with hundreds if not thousands of fish and relaxed on the beach every day. As you can imagine, it was very romantic.

When we arrived at our first hotel, we were exhausted, jet lagged and ready to collapse. We were enjoying a quick lunch when we saw another American couple who had arrived with us. They had reserved an over-water bungalow with steps to the water. They were getting into a canoe to explore the lagoon. As we watched them circle a dock and began to discuss how much we wanted to do the same, the woman stopped paddling, reached behind her back and untied her bikini and pulled it off. From that moment on, we knew this was going to be a very different trip for us.

French Polynesia was a perfect introduction for my wife to feel confident and enjoy being topless around other people. We had gone to Black’s Beach in San Diego earlier in the year but we had found a secluded space, away from everyone else. Here we were surrounded by other couples.

After finishing lunch we went to our bungalow and put on our swimsuits. I teased my wife about leaving her bikini top in the room. She told me I’d have to wait and see. We weren’t on the beach more than 10 minutes before she took over her top. I could tell she was uncomfortable and initially covered up whenever a waiter came by to ask us if we wanted a drink. But that didn’t last long. By the end of the day she was walking, swimming and even canoeing topfree.

My wife has wonderful olive colored skin that gets very dark as she tans. I honestly wasn’t sure which I liked best, her dark-tanned breasts or her glowing white tan lines from her bikini bottoms. After a week of laying out and sunbathing topless I thought she would be totally comfortable being topless anywhere. I was wrong.

Our final island was Moorea. It’s very close to the island of Tahiti where the international airport is and most tourists either begin or end their trip here. When we arrived at the Sofitel resort in the early afternoon, we quickly changed and went out onto the beach and discovered we were surrounded by young, honeymooning American couples. All were proudly wearing new wedding bands and each young lady wore a small bikini in a variety of colors. While there were topless French women here and there and lovely French Polynesian women barely  even wearing a small thong, all of the American women were covered up… including my wife. Having grown used to her being topless all day, I was disappointed when she didn’t take her top off. She explained to me  she was completely uncomfortable showing her breasts in front of all of these other women. I was surprised but I understood. She wore her bikini top all day. The first time in nearly two weeks.

The next morning we arrived at the beach early. Our vacation was nearly over and we wanted to catch every ray of sun before heading back to Ohio. I asked her if she would go topless while the beach was still open and vacant. She took off her bikini top and settled into a good book, which quickly put her to sleep. I was surprised by what happened next.

The chairs around us slowly filled with the same couples we had seen the day before but one by one, each young lady looked at my wife and then shed her bikini top. Based on the nervous excitement between each woman and her husband and their glowing white breasts, I’m guessing this was a first for most of them. By the time my wife woke, she was surprised to see everyone around her was topless too.

During our many trips to nude beaches and clothing optional resorts, I’ve noticed it sometimes takes one woman to remove her top or swimming suit before all of the others follow. This makes perfect sense to me. Who wants to be the first? It’s a risk and if you’re 20 something years old and still learning to accept your body, you don’t want to be first and attract attention.

So with all of those beautiful beaches and women wearing some of the smallest thongs I have ever seen, you would think there would be a few nude beaches. Think again. Full body nudity is actually frowned upon in French Polynesia. Some hotels do allow nude sunbathing on private islands but we discovered not every island is private.

On our third day in French Polynesia, I spoke with one of the resort staff to see where we could sunbath naked. He was funny because he couldn’t understand why we would want to sunbath without our bathing suits especially with my wife already topless. He suggested we canoe to one of the many small islands in the lagoon. We took off on a 10 minute paddle to the closest island. When we pulled our dug out canoe ashore, it looked like paradise. Soft white sand with gentle rolling waves hitting the shore. Lush ferns, moss and coconut trees densely filled the island. This was the nude beach I had always dreamed of enjoying with my young bride. And it was all ours. Or so we thought.

After we took off our bathing suits and pulled out our towels, our lush private island was invaded. French Polynesian men came from the island jungle and around the beach on what we thought was a remote, uninhabited island to tell us in broken French and English to put our bathing suits back on now. Literally surrounded by men yelling at us to cover up, we quickly and embarrassingly pulled our suits on. We laughed about it later in the evening but the last thing we ever wanted to do was offend someone with our nude bodies. Especially when we are tourists in their home.

I’ve read several travel websites since then and all have said that there are a few nude resorts in French Polynesia but you have to search for them. The Polynesian people do not approve of full nudity. It was though a wonderful experience for my wife and me. My wife is very slender and does not have large breasts. While I believe she is stunning, especially when she is naked, she is often embarrassed by her small breasts. Seeing her enjoy herself and be so confident without her top on was wonderful for her and for me. It was also a stepping stone for our next nude travel experience.

UPDATE:

We received several emails asking which hotel we stayed at on Bora Bora. We stayed at the Hotel Sofitel Bora Bora. This hotel was a truly wonderful experience and I would recommend it to anyone, however, it appears the private island in 1997, is now it’s own upscale lodging experience. I could not find anything about nude sunbathing on the island (which you do do in 1997) so I fear you can’t do that on the island anymore.  Does anyone have any updates on nude sunbathing or skinny dipping on one of the islands in French Polynesia?
